About
The National Theatre "Ivan Vazov" is the oldest professional theatre in Bulgaria and one of the country's most prestigious cultural institutions. Founded in 1904 on the basis of the professional theatre troupe "Tears and Laughter," it marked the beginning of a new stage in the development of Bulgarian stage art. Its emblematic building in the center of Sofia was officially opened on January 3, 1907, designed by the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. Having become one of the architectural symbols of the capital, it survived a severe fire in 1923 and several major reconstructions, while preserving its historical appearance and significance. Over more than a century of history, the National Theatre has been home to generations of exceptional Bulgarian actors, directors, and artists. Among the names that have left a lasting mark on its development are Vasil Kirkov, Adriana Budevska, Krastyo Sarafov, Nikolay Masalitinov, Apostol Karamitev, Stefan Getsov, and many others. The theatre is also associated with some of the most significant figures in Bulgarian literature and culture — Ivan Vazov, Pencho Slaveykov, Peyo Yavorov, and Nikolay Liliev. Their works, together with those of great world dramatists, have shaped the rich artistic tradition of Bulgaria's first stage. Today, the National Theatre "Ivan Vazov" continues to be a leading center of theatrical life in Bulgaria. Its repertoire combines classical and contemporary titles, Bulgarian and world drama, as well as experimental stage forms. Established and young artists work on its stages, while international partnerships and guest productions expand its presence in the European cultural space. With its historical heritage, artistic traditions, and pursuit of innovation, the National Theatre "Ivan Vazov" remains a symbol of Bulgarian theatrical art and a meeting place for generations of artists and audiences.
