About

Krum Filipov was born on February 9, 1969, in Smolyan. He graduated with a degree in Bulgarian Philology from St. Kliment Ohridski University (1995) and in Directing from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts "Krastyo Sarafov" (2001), in the class of Prof. Ivan Dobchev. His graduation play, "Blood Wedding" by F.G. Lorca, staged at the Nikola Vaptsarov Drama Theatre in Blagoevgrad, was nominated for an Asker award. During his university studies, he worked as a journalist (in the culture departments of the newspapers "Kontinent" and "Duma") and as a painter – plastering and painting the facade of the National Assembly building. After completing his training at NATFIZ, he began working as a director – 10 theatrical productions awarded at significant theatre forums in Bulgaria and abroad, including "Blood Wedding" by F.G. Lorca, "Viktoria" (based on the story "Pains of the Soul" by Ingmar Bergman), "Marmaladov" (based on "Crime and Punishment" by F.M. Dostoevsky), "Self-Portraits for Recognition" – co-authored with Yuliya Ognyanova and Emilia Ovanesyan, and "Dragon's Wedding" (based on texts by Peyo Yavorov, Tadeusz Różewicz, Vasko Popa, and Czesław Miłosz). He is the screenwriter and director of many music videos, repeatedly broadcast on national television. He is the author of 9 documentary films, three of which were nominated for the "Plovdiv" award, and for the film "Confession" (about the pianist Prof. Georgi Petrov), he received the "Golden Riton" award this year. Since 2009, he has worked as a screenwriter and director of the weekly arts and culture program "Metaphor" on BNT 2. In the last year, he filmed (by invitation from the producers of the documentary series on BNT 1 "Smart Village", Vlado Lyutskanov and Antoaneta Bachurova) portrait films for Bozhana Apostolova, Kolyo Karamfilov, Yasen Gyuzelev, and Palmi Ranchev, which have enjoyed strong viewer interest. He has been writing poetry since childhood, but rarely and sparingly publishes it. Nevertheless, his talent did not go unnoticed – in 1994 he became a laureate of the Tenth National Poetry Competition "Veselin Hanchev", and the following year won first prize in the literary competition "Yavorov" in Pomorie. In the same year, 1995, he published his first poetry collection "Shattered Sky", awarded the Grand Prize of BNR for "the brightest debut in literature". In 1996, he received one of the three annual literature awards from Radio "Deutsche Welle". Currently, he is a freelance director, which will probably leave him more time for writing.
